Saatu Aathun (Gamara)

Saatu Aathun (Gamara) festival is celebrated in many regions of Uttarakhand. This festival is dedicated to Shiva-Parvati. Nanda, who considers Parvati as the whole of Uttarakhand, is her daughter and this festival celebrated in Pithoragarh is also known as Nanda. On the day of Shukla Panchami, the women are worn on the day and on the second day they wash the fresh milk and wash the new milk. These are offered to Nanda. On the eighth day, the virgin bride makes a Gamara or a Gaura with a snow plant and is kept in the trunk. There, in a sheet, Malta, orange etc. are thrown by putting local fruits in a sheet. If a girl comes down to her fruit, then it is believed that she will get married this year. Then the Daliya is placed on the head with a flute and brought to the village and songs from the birthday of Gaura (Nanda) to the in-laws are sung. While keeping Gamara inside the house, Brahman worship with law and legislation. This festival is called eight in Pithoragarh and people from all the villages sing a song, which is called “sports”. On Navami day, Maheshwar i.e. Shiva ji is brought and they are also kept with Gamara. Both of them are worshiped by law and their songs are sung, it is the custom to bring a Gamara-Maheswar in a village. A few days later, these two Dolis are taken to the temple and tears are festooned, it is said to sew Gamara. This is also a form of Nanda caste.
