RAMLEELA Manchan

Based on the story of Lord Rama, the tradition of staging the Ramlila Drama is ancient. This Ramlila, popularly known as folk drama, is staged in different parts of the country in different ways. Ramlila is mainly presented in song-dramatic style in Uttarakhand, especially in Kumaon area.

The conversations, tune, rhythm and voices spoken by Kumaon in Ramlila show a glimpse of the Parsi theater, as well as a glimpse of Braj’s folk songs and gimmicks. There is also a combination of Nepali language and Urdu ghazal for bringing charm and efficacy in the dialogues. In Kumaun’s Ramlila, simple words of local colloquial use are also used. In the dance and songs in the scenes of Ravana Kul, most of the Kumaon style is used.

The Ramlila of the cities of Delhi, Moradabad, Bareilly, Lucknow, organized by the hill migrants in addition to Sataraali, Patia, Nainital, Pithoragarh, Lohaghat, Bageshwar, Ramnagar, Bhawali, Kashim and Ramnagar were considered famous in the initial phase. In the cultural town of Pithoragarh today, Ramlila is organized with enthusiasm in two ramleela grounds near Nagarpalika and in Takana, in which the local villages and the people of the city raise a lot of joy of Ramlila till late night. Ramlila’s attraction in Pithoragarh town is something different. On the day of Dussehra, close to one and a half dozen attractive idols of the Ravana family are rotated in the market.
